An ice storm swept through the region just hours ago, splintering trees and damaging homes. Yet the squirrel’s nest at the crown of the tall maple in my backyard remains intact. It doesn’t rest on thick, sturdy branches. Instead, it hangs from a cluster of slender twigs reaching upward.
The nest was built before winter and has already weathered several storms. Squirrels truly are master builders.
Smart structure. The nest is anchored at multiple points and woven carefully among small branches. In strong winds, the twigs bend rather than snap.
Intelligent design. Its rounded shape forms a tight outer shell of interlaced twigs. Snow likely slides off instead of piling up, keeping the nest light and secure.
Built high. Perched near the top, the nest is safer from predators. It also catches the winter sunlight and offers an early view of approaching danger.
Thoughtful location. A small woodland beyond my yard shields the maple from harsh winds.

That's super interesting, thanks Bree. And nice work, squirrels!
