This bundle of buckthorn stems became a bright spot. After two full seasons outdoors as natural stakes, the stems are still holding strong. I first made it as a holiday decoration, but I kept it beyond the season. The red ribbons bring warmth and life to the winter.
Buckthorn is often labeled a devilish plant, something to be removed at all costs. Once, I saw a pile of buckthorn branches set on fire to prevent berry-bearing stems from taking root again. Burning the stems this way felt brutal to me. The plants themselves are not inherently evil, it’s the absence of natural predators that allows them to spread unchecked.
